With the start of the second phase of IEA Wind Task 54, Energiewerkstatt is once again contributing its technical and planning expertise to the international research cooperation. It is taking over the management of the sub-task “Management of ice throw risk”, in which a comprehensive comparative study on international strategies for the continued operation of wind turbines under icing conditions is being prepared. The aim is to compare best practices and thus initiate a discussion of Austrian licensing practice, which has so far provided for mandatory shutdown.
Other topics of the task period are offshore wind energy in cold climate zones, the complexity of icing events, the systematic consideration of uncertainties in relation to wind energy in cold climate zones and the validation of icing wind tunnels. In addition, the Energiewerkstatt contributes to the revision of the “IEA Recommended Practice 13”, an international guideline for wind energy in cold climates, which provides recommendations for safe and efficient project development at affected sites.
